Week 3

So my air conditioner decided that now is a good time to stop working. On the hottest day I've experienced to date. Typical.

Went to Beachfest yesterday which is the biggest party of the semester. It's held on Reggae Beach at Cockleshell Bay. All you can drink and a variety of games for the drunken: volleyball, kayak races, beer swims, cornhole. My friends and I snorkeled for about 2 hours, ate lunch, people watched and laid in the sun, then headed to Spice Mill for dinner. This is my favorite restaurant on the island. I've been promised the best pizza on the island although every time I went the brick oven pizza shed was closed. But last night we had it - shrimp and olive - delicious!

My leatherback patrol night is Fridays from now on which is perfect because I have a day to recover and then Sunday to study. I saw 2 leatherbacks lay eggs last week and one this week. Apparently this is slower than usual. I've learned to PIT tag, which is like microchipping for 1000lbs turtles. Also learned to take a physcial exam and relocate nests. Reasons for relocating nests include the turtles laying dangerously close to where Kittitians are illegally sand-mining therefore endangering the nests as well as laying too close to the surf. The one we had this past Friday had a curved carapace length of 167cm and laid 115yolked eggs and 15 yolkless. We split the beach into halves (its 4km long) and walk for 30minutes, rest for 30. It's amazing laying on the beach under the stars. As exhausting as it may be, I still crave the experience every week.

Trimmed horses today. There is a laminitic donkey up there still which they are not treating.

Back to studying. A on my first pop quiz, for which the average was a 63%. ouch.

bye for now
