Hatchling Release

It's about time right? Are you surprised when I say that I've been doing nothing but studying? Didn't think so...

Tonight I took a break for a green sea turtle nest excavation. Friday night a handful of first semesters had an illegal bonfire on the beach and interfered with hatchlings on their way to see. You can imagine a bunch of drunk students playing with turtles around a fire; not a great mix. The SKSTMN team went to assess after receiving the report. We rescued 6 hatchlings that were still alive but trapped in various footprints, holes, and of course the campfire pit. We released four of them last night, although two failed to respond. So they join the ranks of our turtle rehab patients, stocking our lab relatively full. We returned today to excavate the nest. I helped dig up all of the remains: 55 unhatched, 99 hatched, 2 live hatchlings! Unfortunately one exhibited congenital lesions including a disfigured beak and bilateral anopthalmia. Both headed to sea.

Back to studying. More frequent updates promised.

bye for now
