So I met a UK Alum at the hash a few months ago. She got her MPH there and we planned a trip to Montserrat together as a break from studying. Little did I know what I was in for. This is what happens when you hitch along on a boat with random strange medical students. Vet school: it's like med school but harder, remember? Enjoy:
11pm Fri Night Before: Arrival at Smita's house. Plan was to crash on her couch since we had to be at Port at 5am next morning. Neither of us currently have a car so we figured best to be together so we could at least coordinate. Her friend to pick us up next morning.
I arrive in PJ's, with my random goods for next day: toothbrush, water bottle, sunscreen. Again, I am ready for bed. Slightly disheveled (it was a long week) but clean. Tshirt, shorts.
Upon entering her apartment I am greeted by six very friendly medical students, who apparently had survived a hellacious exam week. These kids are lit, and wide open at the moment. And here I am, perfect stranger, all ready for bed in this strange house. They are quite friendly, offering me drinks and encouraging me to join in their laughter and games. Alas, we have to get up at 4:45am tomorrow and I'm not about to start drinking games. One of them has a birthday so much excitement ensues. I feel like a bit of a creeper sitting on the couch smiling (i thought it was better than retreating to her room and being antisocial)
12:30 Finally, drinking games wrap up and they GO OUT!! usually the night scene is winding down around now, but these crazies have only just begun. The house empties out, and I retire to Smita's room. It dawns on me that there is no A/C. No problem, I can hack that. But it is 90 degrees and we are all constantly sweating profusely here. Ok, so crawl into unfamiliar bed. Smita's roommate David says on the way out "If you notice an incredibly handsome man coming into your room, don't worry it's just me" yuk yuk. If I notice that you come into my room in the middle of the night I will punch your lights out punk. Don't even try me. Go get trashed and chase after someone else.
I fall asleep at some point, multiple alarms set so we don't miss our ride.
3am: Rooster (s) begin conversing. Dreaded night terrors of peaceful pastures ensue for the next hour. And Smita is not home yet
4:15am: Smita returns!?
4:45am: Wake Up! I drag my ass out of bed, grab my granola bars and shake, yell, jump on the couch to wake up my friend, who is passed out and drunk as hell on the couch. I practically carry her to the bathroom and dump her: get ready!
5:15 I'm pacing the road outside her door watching for signs of ride.
5:20 Smita waddles out in last night's clothes. Looking slightly, well, you get the idea. The boat leaves Port at 5:30am. We are 20min from Port IF we don't meet any strange things in the middle of the road (quite common). She calls ride, I drag us to main road, where a large herd of wild goats is foraging.
5:28 Um, you don't think they will leave us? They have our passports and cell phone numbers and $100US. Plus I want to see the island. Where the hell is our ride...???!
To Be Continued...the adventure has only just begun
