First Day of Class, White Coat Ceremony, and Underwater Photography!

So, I survived the first day of class. Nutrition, Physiology, Microanatomy/Embryology, Gross Anatomy I, and Intro to Vet Science. Naturally, we are slammed. 9000 pages of notes and we were supposed to read a handful of full chapters overnight. Maybe a bit overwhelmed, but I'm not worried. For those of you who are familiar with Dr. Schillo, formerly of the UK ASC Dept, his courses thoroughly prepared me for this, although the remainder of the animal science curriculum sadly did not. Anyway, he would be proud that I was unflinching when our Physio/Nutrition professor met us with a similar, however demanding attitude and teaching style. These courses require time and studying; this is not necessarily rocket science. Some students are already having panic attacks. The White Coat Ceremony followed classes yesterday, when we recited the Veterinary Student Oath and I was beaming.

My first dive here was Sunday - needless to say it beat my little snorkeling bouts. We did about 1 hour at 40ft to a shipwreck called River Taw at Dive St Kitts on Bird Rock Beach. There was a bulldozer next to the ship. Saw a ray, puffers, and tons of others all over, under, around the wreck. Pretty damn cool. There is a gem there called Rocky's, a little beach bar with burgers, etc. and they have wifi, plus covered areas in which we were invited to study. There are no loud crowds, aloe rubbers, or hair braiders. It's more of a "secret" local favorite. Plus the dive shop is right next door. I'll be there as soon as I get my hands on a vehicle.

Finally, it's time - to research an underwater housing for my Canon 50D. I can hardly stand being down there without it. I bought a small disposable Kodak, but we all know how that compares to my real camera. The casings are expensive but I'm going to talk to Murph and figure out how the whole thing works.

Photos of the ceremony and dive to follow shortly, as soon as I retrieve them from my friends.

missing home but keeping busy

bye for now
